Raised on the farm, Cheryl studied viticulture at Stellenbosch and now runs her own organic permaculture garden in Constantia. From a lifetime spent hunting and harvesting, she chose to go vegetarian out of deep respect for the land, and believes the best ingredient in any dish is knowing exactly where it came from. Off the land, she's just as at home in the polished circles of Constantia, chairing half the neighbourhood's garden and social clubs, hosting dinners where half the table came from her own garden that morning, and pouring a wine she actually understands from vine to glass.

Long before she was "Ma Ruth" to half the neighbourhood, she was just a girl in Kalk Bay, listening to her mother grind spice against stone before the sun was even up. She married young, raised a son, buried a husband, and somewhere along the way became the person people call when they need feeding or fixing. She still hums Moravian hymns while she kneads. Still tastes salt with the back of her hand instead of a spoon, because some things you don't measure, you just know.
